IUD Removal
What is an IUD Removal?
An intrauterine device (IUD) is a highly effective, long-lasting, and reversible method of birth control. While IUDs can stay in place for several years, there may come a time when you need or want to have it removed.
Reasons for IUD Removal
Desire to become pregnant: If you're ready to start or expand your family, your IUD will need to be removed.
Expiration of the IUD: IUDs have varying lifespans (3 to 10 years). Once your IUD has reached the end of its recommended timeframe, it needs to be removed.
Side effects: Although rare, some women experience side effects from their IUD that necessitate removal. These can include persistent pain, heavy bleeding, or mood changes.
Change in birth control preference: You may decide to switch to a different birth control method or discontinue contraception altogether.
Medical conditions: In some cases, a medical condition may require the removal of your IUD.
The IUD Removal Procedure
IUD removal is a relatively quick and simple procedure that can be performed in our office.
Before the procedure: We will review your medical history and may perform a pelvic exam.
During the procedure: A speculum will be inserted into the vagina to visualize the cervix. Using specialized forceps, your healthcare provider will gently grasp the IUD strings and carefully remove the IUD.
After the procedure: You may experience mild cramping and light bleeding. You can resume normal activities immediately, unless otherwise advised.
Important Considerations
Timing of removal: An IUD can be removed at any time during your menstrual cycle.
Pregnancy after removal: You can become pregnant immediately after IUD removal. If you do not wish to conceive, discuss alternative birth control options with your doctor before your IUD is removed.
Never attempt self-removal: It is crucial to have your IUD removed by a qualified healthcare professional to minimize the risk of complications.
Potential Complications
While IUD removal is generally safe, potential complications, though rare, can include:
Difficulty locating the IUD strings: In some cases, the strings may not be visible. If this occurs, your healthcare provider may use specialized instruments or an ultrasound to locate the IUD for removal.
IUD breakage: There is a small risk of the IUD breaking during removal.
